Dr. Erich Merkle, Licensed School Psychologist, Office of School Counseling & Student Wellness, Akron Public Schools

Over the past week, there has been a lot of challenging media coverage that could be difficult for our children (and yes, many adults) to consume. Events ranging from another tragic act of school mass violence, wartime coverage in Palestine, Israel and the Ukraine, the presidential debates, divisive political rhetoric on all sides of the aisle and Wednesday's remembrances of September 11, all contribute to emotionally charged news and media airtime. Here are several resources to help caregivers (and adults) navigate so many complex world events and support one another in the daily onslaught of these emotionally powerful media topics:

  • NASP: Talking to young children about violence
  • NY Times: 10 ways to talk about sensitive items in the news
  • PBS: How to help kids cope with violence they hear on news
  • APA: How much news coverage is OK for children?
  • Gold Crown Foundation: Coping with current events
  • PBS Kids: How to talk to your kids about politics
  • Motherly: How to talk to your children about politics in an election year
