Mary B. Outley
Families, Friends & Community Members,

As we near the close of the calendar year, I want to pause and reflect on the power of community that defines Akron Public Schools. This season offers an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and focus on what truly matters. For many families, this time of year is guided by traditions that center light, unity and renewal. Those themes feel especially fitting as we look ahead with hope and purpose.

I am grateful for the many partners, staff members and volunteers who continue to show up for our students in ways both big and small. From supporting families during the holidays to celebrating student learning and creativity, these moments remind us that education is a shared responsibility and a shared joy.

As winter break begins on December 22, I encourage our families and staff to take time to rest, recharge and enjoy being together. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the new year, ready to continue the important work ahead.

On behalf of Akron Public Schools, I wish you peace, warmth and connection throughout the season and a bright start to the year ahead.

With appreciation,

Mary B. Outley

I Promise Students Uniting Cultures at House 330 Event

By Marilyn Miller Paulk, APS Storyteller

Music and Art came together in one room at House 330 where I Promise students entertained guests with one common theme: celebrating various cultures and family holiday traditions.

The goal of the singers and dancers was to spread holiday cheer. Clearly, the mission was accomplished as the students sang and danced in rhythm during an event in which the art students showcased drawings of the things their family enjoyed most during winter holidays.

The LeBron James Family Foundation hosted the I Promise program in support of the Choir and Fine Arts holiday presentation. Read more.

Marathon Holiday Season for Firestone CLC Singers, Dancers

By Ralph N. Paulk, APS Storyteller

The music students at Firestone CLC have been jumping from one venue to the next since the holiday season took full bloom. Some 110 performers have covered a lot of miles the past few days, lifting their voices and dancing tirelessly. On Friday, the Madrigals performed at the Akron Woman’s City Club Holiday Luncheon before caroling in the lobby of EJ Thomas Hall then performing there with the Akron Symphony Orchestra Choir. Winter Break: More Cocoa, Less Chaos

Dr. Erich Merkle, School Psychologist, Office of Special Education

Two weeks off from school...hooray! As your family gears up for winter break, this might be a great time to think about mixing cozy downtime with all the fun (and sometimes hectic) gatherings ahead. Consider this your friendly reminder that taking a break from screens, video games and social media could actually boost everyone's mood; yes, even the teens! Simple things like keeping a loose daily routine and building in some quiet time when the chaos gets real might help everyone stay balanced. And here's something worth remembering: years from now, your kids will likely recall the hot cocoa conversations, game nights and silly moments together far more vividly than any gifts under the tree, no matter how much they cost or how many there are. Connection and presence, that's where the real magic of the season happens. Happy holidays and Joyous New Year!
