Mary B. Outley
Families, Friends & Community Members,

As we approach the middle of December, there is a warm and steady rhythm in our schools. Classrooms are wrapping up projects before winter break, celebrations are underway, and families are preparing for time together. This is also the final stretch for open enrollment. If you are considering a school outside your neighborhood or exploring one of our specialty programs, applications are due on Monday, December 15.

This season of holidays offers many ways to connect. Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa bring traditions that center family, reflection and community. I hope each of you finds moments of rest and joy in the weeks ahead.

There is also a great deal happening across Akron Public Schools. Our staff and students continue to shine. Several of our schools were recognized at the state level for outstanding PBIS programs. Planning is underway for the seventieth Annual STEM Expo on January thirty one, with opportunities for judges, booth hosts, volunteers and sponsors. We continue to update our community on the construction and renovation projects throughout the district, and you can follow that progress on our website.

This week we also highlight the partnership between Mason Elementary CLC and Vincent House. Their work together has helped students regain confidence and stability after the challenges of the pandemic. You can read more about their story in this week’s update.

Our students continue to make us proud across the district. From leadership experiences like the DECA Power Trip to creative and seasonal activities taking place in many of our schools, their talents and hard work are on full display. Dr. Merkle also reminds us that stepping away from social media, even briefly, can support better rest and lower stress during winter break.

As always, thank you for supporting Akron Public Schools. I am grateful for the way our community continues to show up for our students and for one another.

With appreciation,

Mary B. Outley, Superintendent

Mason CLC Students Finding Purpose, Direction at Vincent House

By Ralph N. Paulk, APS Storyteller

With the Mason Elementary CLC community attempting to rebound from the damage done by the pandemic, the school needed a willing partner to help it get back to some semblance of normalcy. Or, something close to normal. It was an undeniably challenging task. Yet, the staff at Vincent House, a rapidly thriving and impactful non-profit bolstered by Citizens Akron Church, stepped in to accept the challenge of helping the school – and its students – navigate through some difficult times. Log Off, Level Up: Winter Break's Mental Health Gift

Dr. Erich Merkle, School Psychologist, Office of Special Education

Recent research found that young adults who took just a one-week break from social media felt noticeably less depressed, anxious and slept better. Winter break might be the perfect time to try this experiment, replacing scrolling with face-to-face hangouts, outdoor activities or creative projects. The benefits were strongest for those already feeling moderately stressed, though staying connected with friends remains important.
