Superintendent Outley's Weekly Update - District News, Updates, and Resources

May 7, 2026

Mary B. Outley
Families, Friends & Community Members,

As we move closer to the end of another school year, I continue to be grateful for the people who make Akron Public Schools such a special place for our students. This week, during Teacher Appreciation Week, we recognize the educators who show up every day with patience, compassion, and a commitment to helping every child learn and grow. The work happening in our classrooms changes lives, and we are thankful for the lasting impact our teachers make across our district.

This week, we were also proud to recognize our Employee of the Year honorees and celebrate the many staff members who support our schools each day. From classrooms to cafeterias, buses to offices, every role contributes to the success and well being of our students.

Next week, we look forward to honoring outstanding educators at our Teacher of the Year Banquet and celebrating the dedication and excellence they bring to Akron Public Schools.

This week's newsletter highlights many reasons to celebrate, including Brianna Ellerson Dyer of Firestone CLC receiving the Sojourner Truth Legacy Scholarship for her academic achievement, leadership, and dedication to service. We also celebrate the success of the Ellet CLC girls flag football team and the meaningful hands on learning experiences taking place through Buchtel CLC s Culinary Arts pathway.

As we approach the end of the school year, I encourage families to stay engaged, complete the APS Family Survey, and continue supporting students as they finish strong. Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to support Akron Public Schools.

With appreciation,

Mary B. Outley

Merkle's Mental Health Moment

Still Here, Still Mattering: Why School Belonging Is More Important Than Ever Right Now

Dr. Erich Merkle, School Psychologist, Office of Special Education

As we enter the final stretch of the school year, and in honor of both Mental Health Awareness Month and Children's Mental Health Awareness Week (May 3–9), it may be worth pausing to ask: does every child in our school feel like they truly belong here? Research suggests the answer matters enormously. When students believe that the adults and peers around them care about their learning and about them as people, they appear far less likely to experience emotional distress, poor mental health, and suicidal ideation, and those protective effects may follow a child well into their 20s and even their late 30s. As report cards and final projects loom, some of our kids may quietly be feeling more invisible than celebrated, and the simplest gesture from a caring adult could make all the difference. Never underestimate the power of being one caring adult and helping every student feel connected to our schools
