February 6, 2026

Mary B. Outley
Families, Friends & Community Members,

February marks Black History Month, a time to reflect, learn, and honor the enduring contributions, leadership, and resilience of Black Americans.

Across Akron Public Schools, this month provides an opportunity to explore history in ways that help all students better understand the experiences and contributions that have shaped our community and our country. As we observe Black History Month, we reflect on national figures as well as the Black graduates and community members from Akron whose stories continue to inspire students across our district. Learning about trailblazers past and present helps students better understand the experiences, challenges, and contributions that shape our society today.

That work was reflected at the Akron MLK Power Love and Justice Female Youth Symposium, which APS was proud to support. More than 40 young women joined educators, mentors, and community leaders in a space focused on empowerment, confidence, and connection. Experiences like this reinforce the importance of creating learning environments where students feel supported and encouraged to grow.

As we look ahead, we are preparing for the 70th Annual STEM Expo, a milestone event that reflects decades of student curiosity and innovation. We look forward to celebrating the creativity and problem solving skills of APS students when the Expo takes place in March.

Across the district, work is also moving forward to strengthen our schools and learning environments.

Ongoing construction and renovation projects represent continued investment in the spaces where students learn, grow, and build their futures, and families can visit our district website for regularly updated information on this work.

As we observe National School Counseling Week, we recognize the essential role school counselors play in supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. Their guidance and advocacy help students navigate challenges, plan for the future, and feel supported each day.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for the many ways you support our students. Together, we are honoring history while continuing to build strong opportunities for every child.

With appreciation,

Mary B. Outley

Ellet CLC Seeking Fifth Straight Girls' City Series Title

By Ralph N. Paulk, APS Storyteller

“The girls value basketball and take seriously the passion they’ve put into it,” said Harris, whose team escaped with a 43-31 win over Buchtel on Jan. 22. “It's created a very positive environment." Even though the focus is on winning another league title, Harris possesses visions of grandeur for girls' basketball in Akron. Read more.

Celebrating Black History Month: Stories That Nourish the Mind and Heart

Dr. Erich Merkle, School Psychologist, Office of Special Education

Each February, the United States observes Black History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black Americans throughout the nation's history. Celebrating Black History Month can serve as a meaningful opportunity for families to explore these rich stories and contributions together, an experience that might strengthen children's sense of empathy, cultural belonging, and connection. Research reveals that learning about diverse trailblazers and honoring their legacies may foster a deeper sense of purpose and emotional well-being in young minds.
