Recognizing May as National Mental Health Month is an opportunity to reflect on the power of social connectedness and how it's crucial to our well-being and survival. Most health researchers have recognized for years that loneliness can increase the risk for early death, and the nature of that risk extends beyond many leading health behaviors, including smoking and obesity. Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic increased social isolation for many, including older adults, who are most vulnerable to the virus, and children, who missed out on many social and collaborative opportunities while schools were closed. US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a report discussing how to combat the epidemic of loneliness and social isolation. We all have the power to connect to others to improve this key metric of our wellness and support those around us.
