This week reflects the power of opportunity and the many ways our students are preparing for what comes next. I am proud of our students who competed in the DECA District 10 Competition at the University of Akron. More than 50 students qualifying for the State Career Development Conference in Columbus is an impressive achievement and a clear example of how classroom learning connects to real world experiences.
We are also looking ahead to the 70th Annual STEM EXPO on January 31. This longstanding event continues to thrive because of the educators, volunteers, judges, and partners who believe in sparking curiosity and problem solving in our students. Opportunities like this help students see themselves as innovators and leaders.
Earlier this week, I had the honor of speaking at Akron’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day symposium focused on uplifting young women and girls. The conversations centered on leadership, purpose, and the responsibility we all share in helping students see their potential and their power to shape the future. It was an inspiring reminder of why representation, encouragement, and access to opportunity matter so deeply.
Stories like Sharda Rai’s journey from Akron Public Schools to a career at Akron Children’s Hospital remind us why these experiences matter. Her path highlights the impact of internships, mentorship, and community support in helping students turn potential into purpose.
Across our district, students continue to make their voices heard through academics, the arts, and civic engagement. From student artwork featured in a countywide youth anti vaping campaign to national recognition in computer science and theatre, our students are showing creativity, courage, and commitment.
With winter weather becoming more common this time of year, I want to remind families where to find the most up to date information if school schedules are impacted. Decisions are shared through an alert pop up on the district website, our official social media pages, all call messages sent directly to families, and with local media so information is available across multiple trusted channels.

APS Dominate DECA District 10 Competition; Dozens Qualify for State Championship
Akron Public Schools is proud to announce that, while visiting the University of Akron for the DECA District 10 Competition, over 50 of our students recently qualified for the upcoming State Career Development Conference in Columbus. Local Student Art Featured in Youth Anti-Vaping Campaign
Summit County Public Health is proud to feature artwork by an Akron Public Schools student, Londynn Hoffman, in its latest campaign focused on youth nicotine cessation. This youth-designed initiative highlights the harmful effects of vaping on the adolescent brain and emphasizes the power of young voices in our community. Free and confidential support is available for any local youth seeking help to quit.

Consider establishing simple winter rituals, perhaps a family game night rotation, trying a new recipe together, or setting up cozy reading corners that could help transform these darker weeks into opportunities for connection rather than sources of stress or boredom. Activities like creating indoor obstacle courses for movement, organizing themed baking projects, exploring virtual museum tours, or visiting local recreation centers may provide additional structure and engagement during this challenging seasonal cold and snow.
