Mary B. Outley
Families, Friends & Community Members,

This week’s update reflects the many ways our students, staff, and partners are showing up for one another across Akron Public Schools.

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I am reminded that Dr. King’s legacy lives on through service, creativity, and community care. I encourage families to view this long weekend as a time to reflect, learn, and serve together. Opportunities like the MLK Weekend Youth Symposium at John R. Buchtel CLC offer students space to engage in meaningful conversations about identity, hope, and belonging.

Belonging is also at the heart of the spotlight you will read about sixth grader Mattison Solomon at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts. Mattison’s experience speaks to what is possible when students are encouraged to explore their interests and feel valued for who they are. Our schools are strongest when students feel seen, supported, and free to discover new paths.

I am also grateful for the continued support of our community partners. Buckeye Logistics’ recent donation to Project RISE is one example of how collective care helps ensure students facing housing instability have access to the resources they need to stay engaged in school.

You will also find updates on opportunities to get involved, including the upcoming STEM EXPO, ongoing construction and renovation projects across the district, and important health supports like APS Winter Wellness Day. These efforts reflect our shared commitment to student wellbeing, safety, and long term success.

Thank you for staying connected, for supporting our students, and for being an essential part of the APS community.

With appreciation,

Mary B. Outley

Turning up the Volume at Miller South | Fundraiser Meets New Sound System Goal

Miller South Students

Thanks to an incredible community effort, the Miller South Performing Arts auditorium has a brand-new, professional sound system. Led by parents Andy Shepperd and Mina Riazi, a recent fundraiser at Musica raised over $13,000 in just eight weeks. With a generous equipment discount from Audio-Technica U.S., Inc., the school was able to replace an outdated system that had been prone to technical failures. The new system will benefit every student in the school, ensuring their voices are heard clearly during recitals, art presentations, and performances. Read the full article here.

How Mattison Solomon Explores Creativity and Belonging at APS

Mattison - APS Student

For sixth-grader Mattison Solomon, Miller South is more than just a school; it’s a community where creativity is part of everyday life. Though she originally auditioned for theater, Mattison has found her groove playing the saxophone in the school band and recently discovered a new passion for dance through the school’s unique "interest area" rotations.

What stands out most to Mattison is the school’s inclusive culture. "At my old school, people were grouped into labels," Mattison shares. "At Miller South, differences are celebrated." From building "junkyard monsters" to illustrate psychological concepts to participating in "Dance in Your Chair" vocabulary lessons, Mattison believes these creative collaborations are what make the students "one big group." By encouraging students to explore new specialties without the pressure of cliques, Miller South helps students like Mattison find their voices and grow into confident artists.

Mattison's advice for new students is to pay close attention on day one, but don't be nervous; the older students are incredibly welcoming!

Honoring Dr. King Through Service and Community Healing

On this Monday, Jan. 19, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a National Day of Service that invites families to strengthen mental health and community connection through acts of kindness and service. Research suggests that volunteering and community engagement might reduce stress, build social connections and foster a sense of purpose, all vital ingredients for emotional well-being. Consider making this a "day on, not a day off" by exploring family-friendly service opportunities together.
