As we move into December, I want to remind everyone that open enrollment for the 2026-27 school year is still open through December 15. This window is the time to apply if you are considering a school outside your neighborhood or exploring one of our specialty programs.
This season also brings a sense of momentum across Akron Public Schools. Our teams are preparing for the 70th annual STEM Expo on January 31, a signature event that highlights the curiosity and problem-solving skills of our students. At the same time, we continue to make steady progress on construction and renovation projects across the district, and we will keep sharing updates so families can follow the work taking shape in our schools.
There were bright moments in the news this week, including a Firestone senior who had the chance to meet Oscar winning costume designer Paul Tazewell in New York City. It is always inspiring to see our students connect their passions with real world experiences. We also celebrate support coming to Buchtel seniors through the Elevating Possibility Scholarship and continue to uplift the efforts of Project Rise as they serve families facing housing instability.
Dr. Merkle offers thoughtful guidance this week as many households move into a busy holiday season. His reminder to slow down and center joy is something I hope we can all take with us.
Thank you for staying connected and for the many ways you support our students and staff. I appreciate this community and all we continue to build together.
